Revolutionising Training

Image
Author: Alex McLachlan New technological developments have led to a revolution in rugby training, especially for professional rugby players. The cryogenic chamber is one of these new technological developments.   In the chamber the recipient receives bursts of nitrogen gas at thirty second increments. The freezing gas surrounds the body forces your blood to retreat to protect the body’s vital organs. This process puts your body into a survival mode and fills the blood with oxygen. When stepping out of the cryogenic chamber the blood will immediately rush back into the body’s arms and legs, giving the body a warm sensation, meaning the process is working References: Cryogenic Chamber Image - http://www.goldsgym.com/vacavilleca/wp-content/uploads/sites/899/2014/08/altitude-training-vacaville-gym.jpg

Keeping Your Game Simple

Image
Author: Alex McLachlan In recent times young rugby teams have begun to complicate their game. Many professional rugby players have advised coaches of young rugby teams to simplify the structure of their game and focus on teaching the players to perfect the basics. After watching the professional players, many young players want to try to use all the moves they see them use, this can lead to confusion in the young players whilst playing. It could also lead to the players growing up without a proper understanding of the basics of the game. This is why the best teams in grass roots rugby use simple drills to train their skills. The Correct Way to Foam Roll

Image
Author: Matthew Oliver If you are strength training you have to get some sort of tissue work done, like a massage therapist or you need to do it yourself in the case of the foam roll. However massage therapist costs time and money so a foam roll has plenty of perks such as being accessible around any gym and an effective way to stretch before your workout. However some athletes don’t know to foam roll to best of its potential. What you got to do is start at the top of that muscle whatever area of your body it is in the back or legs. You let the foam roll rest at that spot and you’ll notice right away that there is a resistance between the muscle and the foam roller. You’ve got to stay there and breathe, almost a meditative spot. You’ll find that the muscle will hurt however once you start to breathe and meditate the muscle will start to soften. This is because you are allowing the foam roll to stretch the muscle and utilising this to your advantage. Inst...

Cheat Day: Good or Bad?

Image
Author: Matthew Oliver We all have those cravings where we look up to the ceiling and tell yourself I could really go for some pizza and ice-cream right now. So why not have a cheat day? Cheat days are simple; 1 day in a month, week or fortnight where you can spurge on all your favourite junk food guilt free and then return to your diet. Sounds good? Well actually it is. When you are dieting you are considered cutting; at cutting hormonal changes take place in the body where it shifts energy intakes to catabolism. That means your body will start taking breaking down fat or protein. The longer you start in a cutting phase the longer the profund these effects on your body take a place. By introducing a cheat meal you can reset the state of catabolism which is a great benefit for gaining a sly bit of muscle mass that has been taken out from cutting.   So in short, Cheat Days are good… but remember weight loss is ultimately a numbers name; if you eat ...

Rugby Essentials for Young Teams

Image
Author: Alex McLachlan When coaching a young team you may have many children that have no rugby experience. It is very important for coaches to show the new players the correct technique in tackling, handling and scrummaging.   Good drills for young, inexperienced players for each of these skills are knee tackling, horizontal passing in lines of 4 and one on one tackling. Knee tackling helps the kids improve their technique and teaches them wfhere their body should be in relation to their opposition. Horizontal passing in lines of 4 involves the players passing to one another while running in a straight line. A good scrummaging drill for players of all ages is one on one scrummaging, this teaches the players the best body position to be in to prevent injury in scrums.
